SIMON LOK
SIMON LOK
Born and raised in Guangzhou China, Simon Lok, (Saiping Lok) was interested in Art since he was a teenager. He learned drawing and painting in his early twenties through tutoring. He took the difficult five-day entry exams that includes drawing, painting, story boarding, Chinese literature, and Art History for a prestigious Art School in his home town three times, but never was admitted. When he found out that he reached his age limit, (no application for art schools or universities is accepted in China when you are older than 25) he decided to pursue his art career and moved to America in 1982. He enrolled in the ArtCenter College of Design in Pasadena and in California State Long Beach and studied illustration during the late 80’s and early 90’s.
Simon was hired as a visual development artist by Disney Feature Animation in 1993. He participated the making of many feature films, such as Planes, the Princess and the Frog, Bolt, Brother Bear and Mulan, (his movie credit name is Saiping Lok) just to name a few. It was working at Disney that his painting skills took off. In such a competitive yet friendly environment, he not only learned as many design principles from his peers as he could, but also participated in many landscape painting activities with the California Art Club (CAC), and workshops taught by well known artists throughout the country. His job at Disney involved designing the mood and the looks of films.
After an over two-decade and successful career in animation, Simon recently turned his attention to easel painting. Figure painting is one of his favorite subjects, and it is the relationship between the figure and the landscape that intrigues him. Simon is a signature member of CAC and an awards recipient of a first place award of landscape of CAC Gold Medal Exhibition. His work is in the collection of the Bowers Museum, among others.
