HEIDI AMENDA MARSHALL

Heidi Amenda Marshall grew up on the shore of Lake St. Clair near Detroit, Michigan and the banks of the Rhine in Dusseldorf, Germany. She comes from a long line of artists including her father, William Amenda, who was Chief Editorial Illustrator for the Detroit News.

While she enjoys savoring and studying art in museums and galleries across the United States and Europe, Heidi is first and foremost a lover of the outdoors who deeply appreciates the power and poetry of the landscape, which she reflects in her plein air paintings and studio works. She prefers the graphic richness and reflective properties of pastels and their beautiful immediacy for plein air work.

Heidi has had one-woman exhibits at the University of Michigan and Lake Superior State University. She was also presented with a residency through a National Parks Award by the Department of the Interior, and enjoys painting in wild places. Recent honors include acceptance of her painting “Winter Track” for the Pastel Society of America’s 2018 Enduring Brilliance exhibition at the National Arts Club in New York, and further selection of this painting by Chief Curator Dr. Lois A. Zona for an exclusive exhibit at the Butler Institute of American Art. The International Association of Pastel Societies awarded Heidi the Paula Ford Memorial Award in 2018 for her painting, “Summer Barn.”

Heidi received her BFA from Albion College in Painting and Printmaking and MFA from Wayne State University. As pastellists, she cites W. Truman Hosner and Albert Handel as having been her most influential mentors. She divides her time between her home on the sandy beaches and Great Lakes dunes of Petoskey, Michigan, and her adopted home in the Land of Enchantment, Santa Fe, New Mexico. Of recent note, Heidi received an Honorable Mention in The Pastel 100 for 2021. Every year Pastel Journal chooses the 100 best pastels in the world, and Heidi received such recognition. Prior to this award, in 2019 Heidi received the Paul Ford Award for the International Association of Pastel Societies, known as IAPS. Of the many who apply to be in the exhibit, only about 140 are chosen, and only 6 awards are given. Recently, Heidi achieved Master Circle status with the International Association of Pastel Societies. This honor recognizes artists whose work has been accepted and given awards in five IAPS Exhibitions. This is an important and special recognition for all the hard work and dedication Heidi has devoted to the pastel medium.
